PlanFirst Success Stories celebrate communities across the state that are successfully implementing their comprehensive plans. They are doing this by undertaking specific projects or community initiatives called for in their local plan. DCA highlights these outstanding initiatives and projects in order that these examples may foster creative thinking, new ideas, and lead to similar initiatives being undertaken across the state.

City of Baconton,Georgia  

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony 2021

 

From the City of Baconton’s Community Work Program (2017 – 2021) Comprehensive Plan, the statement “build a Community Center to house senior/youth program” became the initiative for the Baconton Community Center. Today, the center provides daily services for seniors and other youth programs, and the residents of Baconton will be able to enjoy the center for years to come.

City of Bainbridge,Georgia  

Stormwater Identification, Inspection, and Mapping Effort

 

For its issue of floods, the City of Bainbridge moved forward to convert its paper maps to GIS mapping when finding its stormwater infrastructure. This accomplishment allowed for new data to be incorporated into a model for sanitary sewer, water, and gas systems while identifying and solving the city’s problem of flooding.

City of Sylvester, Georgia

Pedestrian Mall/Amphitheater

 

In November 2018, construction began on a pedestrian mall/amphitheater as well as improvements to the downtown parking lot. With its completion in April 2019, the pedestrian mall/amphitheater serves as a place to gather for shopping and entertainment, and business owners have reported an increase in pedestrian traffic and revenue, adding to the economic viability of the downtown district.

City of Thomasville, Georgia

Downtown Economic Development - Courtyard-Marriott  

 

In 2013, the City of Thomasville purchased a former Roses Department Store that was located adjacent to the historic downtown. Now transformed into the Downtown Courtyard Marriott Hotel, the premier hotel expands the city’s walkable center, enhances the surrounding area, and creates a model for public engagement and comprehensive plan implementation.

City of Sylvester,Georgia

City Hall Renovation

 

The City of Sylvester recently completed the renovation of its City Hall after more than a year of construction. The building was formerly the Sylvester Banking Company and is more than 100 years old. Today, it houses all city services and is the new City Hall. The City’s administrative services and manager’s office and meeting spaces will also be housed there.
